It’s a little dark, but I wanted the natural light to shine through. The desk surface is a treated baseboard from the barn on my father’s farm, which dates from the 1920s. The desk, along with it’s medium-amount of mess, is the centerpiece of a studio apartment focused on creative work and expression.

The Greenhouse is my favorite place I’ve ever lived. It’s designed as a space that’s just perfectly sized for me, and is all about my work and the things I love. It features my wonderful custom sitting and standing desks, a reading corner with extra shelf space, an entryway with a shrine to all of my favorite things, and whiteboards everywhere. Four months after I exhaustedly first opened the door, I’m ready to call it basically finished.

Pick a Name for My Apartment
Now that I’m really starting to feel at home here, I feel like this place needs a name. Something that represents how much I’m enjoying myself here, but also its purpose as a sort of laboratory for all my weird ideas. So, I’m soliciting suggestions, on your Tumblr replies and Twitters and such. Winner receives my undying gratitude.
It’s okay, I didn’t like that closet door anyway.
Oh, I could have bought a real calendar or something. But this is more fun.
Apartment Update: A series of frames donated by my mother, combined with my interest in putting a lot of whiteboards in the space, have made me switch ideas from a brown to a black wood and white writing space design. Then I happened on this IKEA hack where a bar table is mounted on top of the EXPEDIT shelving I was already interested in customizing. That it could serve as a standing desk to alternate with my sitting desk makes it all the more appealing.
Oh, and a platform bed, with lots of pillows to make it seem day bed-ish.
In general, the theme of the design is ideas. For at least a little while, this is both where I live and where my ideas are made and I want the room to be a tribute to that - lots of white boards, lots of table space.
